Can anyone assist me. My Dart has a lot of play in the steering. This is seem by the amount of play in the steering wheel before we have any movement in the steering box.
We have tried adjusting it but it does not help.
I don’t want to change it for a rack and pinion solution.
Does anyone have any tips or tricks as to how to rebuild the steering box or get rid of the play.

HI, If the worm thread is worn on the flanks it will need replacing. Assuming that is not the case, it could be that the tapered mating peg on the lever arm has worn a flat where it touches the flank of the worm. this could ultimately result in the peg contacting the root of the worm before it touches the flank when you try to adjust the play.
I believe the peg may be available for replacement if that is reqd.

    Thank you.
I have already changed the pin and it does not help much!
I am beginning to wonder whether or not to change to rack and pinion arrangement because there is currently no pleasure in driving the car. In fact it seems to be dangerous as it the steering is heavy and the car seems to wonder when being driven at speed.
The mechanic who has done the work so far states that this is normal for an SP250!
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Hi, Have you checked the steering and front suspension joints for excessive play? If the wishbone bushes

and the vertical link joints are worn they will all need replacing.

These are all areas that can affect the road holding

The suspension has been recently rebuilt and all the front suspension bushes replaced with poly bushes .
