The Summer solstice just slipped by, marked with intense sunshine followed alas by a day or so later with torrential thunderstorms, which thankfully cleared the skies for a most enjoyable top-down drive to the National Rally. This year being held in the heart of the country at Coombe Abbey just outside Coventry the ancestral home of the motor car. There were a variety of models abounding the filed, JDHT brought along a eclectic range of Daimlers, amongst which was the late Queen’s personal car with a number of novel features which included a modified armrest for her handbag!

I have booked a DLOC stand at Kop Hill 12th -13th September https://kophillclimb.org.uk/ for their annual weekend bash of fundraising. When having booked your entry, get transferred to the DLOC stand.

I was sad to read recently that Allan Lupton, aeronautical engineer, leading VSCC handicapper, and great Lea Francis aficionado passed away in late December. However, along life’s tapestry he acquired a number of SPs, and in his own words you can read an article he wrote a number of years ago ‘entitled 4½ SPs’.

Allan was always willing to answer any questions fielded to him, looking back we seemed to have last exchanged emails in November.

‘The Thing’ that Allan acquired and which he subsequently returned to a road going SP, was later acquired by Pez Newton and with which Pez raced for a few years. I have somewhere a photograph of ‘The Thing’ trackside at Silverstone where Allan plied his spare time as a senior handicapper but as yet couldn’t locate it.

We have as usual booked a stand at the NEC Classic Car show being held on the 13th – 15th Nov. We are stand 380 in Hall 3 and are opposite the DLOC stand itself. The discount code is CCTDLOCN6 to save a few pounds. We are currently working on the stand exhibits.

I trust by now all should have received the 23rd and latest edition of pasSPort – the global owners’ handbook an essential tool for the glovebox.

We are planning an SP250 day at the Shuttleworth Collection in Bedfordshire. on Saturday 24th July 2027 so please make that date in your diary. https://www.shuttleworth.org/visit/before-you-visit/car-clubs Further details will be published in the Driving Member and this newsletter.

Although the Spa Classic is some 10 months away Alan Mason is taking ‘interested’ bookings with a firmer sign up in the New Year! – Oh gosh nearly another year goes by.

Thought for the day: I never question my wife’s choices – I am one of them!
